FULL SERVICE TRIP DESCRIPTION
When participants arrive at Rocky Ford Camp, a camp will be set up and waiting for them. The evening can be spent swimming, taking a hike, playing Volleyball, fishing for Channel Cat or just relaxing around a camp fire.
First
morning.....up early for a continental breakfast of donuts,
homemade cinnamon rolls, fruit, orange juice, coffee and coco. We
will leave Rocky Ford and strive for a 9:45 a.m. arrival at
the refuge bridge. Transportation is provided by Rocky
Ford so that your cars are waiting for you at trip's end.
At
the embarkation you are given your coolers with lunches and
beverages, which have been packed for you by Rocky Ford staff. Lunches
consist of homemade deli sandwiches with your choice of roast
beef, chicken breast, turkey or ham colby jack or american
cheese, condiments, chips homemade cookies, water and lemonade.
A short session on canoeing and safety techniques is given
to
inexperienced
canoers;
river
reading
will also
be explained. Our goal is to get you on the water by
10:00 a.m., where you can make your own pace going down the
river.
The
first leg of the trip takes you through the scenic game refuge
featuring beautiful western vistas, sand stone cliffs and the
ice walls of the Niobrara, then comes Berry Bridge and Berry
Falls. About another hour downstream is Smith Falls which
is a good place for lunch. Later that afternoon at Brewer
Bridge we will meet you and shuttle you back to camp. Once
participants arrive at the camp site we will begin the evening
meal which consist of steak, potato, salad, dessert and drinks.
Chicken breast may be substituted for elk meat at your request.

TWO DAY FULL SERVICE TRIP
continues as follows
Second
morning....breakfast is started when you are up and ready. Fill
up for the day with breakfast casserole, fruit, rolls juice and
coffeee. After
you finish breakfast you will prepare to leave for the second
leg of the trip, and be shuttled back to Brewer Bridge.
Second leg of the trip... the water becomes a little more exciting with numerous small rapids, riffles and standing waves all of which can be handled by the novice canoer. There are a couple of waterfalls a very short distance off the river that are worth stopping to see. At
between 12 and 2 p.m. you will arrive at Rocky Ford Camp. You might want to spend some time there before returning to your home or continuing your vacation journey. There are t-shirts, other souvenirs and picture taking.
You will have canoed 26 miles of water with difficulty ranging from easy to medium, in that order, so as to gain confidence in personal skills and to learn the use of the canoe.
The wild life that may be encountered on your trip include: Sandhill Cranes, Golden and Bald Eagles, coyote, turkey vultures, wild turkey, hakes, owls, bobcats, mink, beavers, an assortment of ducks and birds, White Tail and Mule Deer and Great Blue Herons that will lead you down river for miles. |
